Oil Leaks

Any engine oil leak is not normal. When you notice a dark puddle of liquid below your car, that is a sign that you have a leak. Inside the engine there are two states of oil, pressurized and non-pressurized. Oil leaks that are not pressurized tend to be less aggressive. Oil that is pressurized will leak more when the engine is running, while non-pressurized oil leaks tend to be steadier. Make sure you check your engine’s oil level before you get started. It may require you to clean the engine a little to help you see. It is good practice to clean the engine cold to prevent steam. If possible, try to inspect the engine yourself to get an idea of where the oil is coming from. This will help estimate what has to be done to fix your oil leak.

Coolant Leaks

There are several areas within your cooling system that you can get a coolant leak. Typically, coolant leaks are very easy to spot. If you see green, yellow, or even orange liquid dripping from your engine area, this is a good sign you have a coolant leak. It is best to raise the hood and try to pinpoint where the leak may be occurring. Here’s a few areas to look:

  • Radiator
  • Hoses
  • Freeze Plugs
  • Heater Core
  • Intake Manifold
  • Cracked Block
  • Bad Head Gasket

Radiator Repair

Radiator leaks tie right into coolant leaks because that’s exactly what a radiator leaks, coolant. Most radiator leaks do not occur because of how many miles you have on your car, they happen due to age. Throughout the life cycle of your radiator, your car gets exposed to tons of outside elements than can play a role in breaking down your radiator. If you detect a radiator issue, contact Mobile Automotive Repair in Oklahoma City for your radiator repair needs.

Gasket and Silicone Reseals

If you notice a slow loss of coolant with no visible leaks or your check engine light notifies you of a coolant issue, you very well may have a coolant leak. A diagnostic by Mobile Automotive Services should detect whether or not you do, in fact, have a leak issue.

Regardless of the cause, a head gasket failure is bad news for the vehicle owner so let Mobile Automotive Services of Oklahoma City handle your repair needs.

Water Pump Repair

The all important water pump is the mechanism that pumps coolant through your engine. Water pumps failure is common and you can expect to have to replace your water pump around the 100,000 mile mark, if not sooner. Some water pumps are driven by a timing belt which makes it difficult to diagnose a bad bearing. When your water pumps starts to go out, it’s usually caused by the bearing for the pulley goes out or the gasket starts to leak. If you think you’re having water pump problems, let Mobile Automotive help you with your Oklahoma City water pump needs.

Thermostat

It is surprising that such a small part can have such a big impact, but your thermostat plays a big role in your engine’s performance. The sudden failure of an inexpensive part can leave you and your vehicle stranded by the side of the road. This is especially true of the cooling system thermostat. The primary function of the thermostat is to allow the engine to warm up quickly containing the amount of coolant that is transferred into the radiator.

A/C Repair

Now more than ever, your auto mechanic is at the mercy of this new environmental legislation. Not only is he required to be certified to purchase refrigerant and repair your air conditioner, his shop must also incur the cost of purchasing expensive, dedicated equipment that insures the capture of these ozone depleting chemicals, should the system be opened up for repair. Basic knowledge of your air conditioning system is important, as this will allow you to make a more informed decision on your repair options.

Should a major problem arise from your air conditioner, you may encounter new terminology. Words like “retrofit” and “alternative refrigerant” are now in your mechanic’s glossary. You may be given an option of “retrofitting”, as opposed to merely repairing and recharging with Freon. Retrofitting involves making the necessary changes to your system, which will allow it to use the new industry accepted, “environmentally friendly” refrigerant, R-134a. This new refrigerant has a higher operating pressure, therefore, your system, dependent on age, may require larger or more robust parts to counter its inherent high pressure characteristics. This, in some cases, will add significant repair difficulty and if not performed properly, may reduce cooling efficiency which equates to higher operating costs and reduced comfort.

C/V Boots

U-joints are an important component that connects your engines drive line. If these joints fail, you could be left stranded. A bad U-joint can most commonly be recognized when you hear a clank or a metallic banging sound when you put your car in gear. This is an obvious sign that you have U-joint trouble and it is recommended to have this inspected quickly. Other symptoms of a failing U-joint are vibrations from the drive shaft, noticeable especially between 25 and 35 mph; shudder on acceleration and/or squeaking noises.

Battery Trouble

If you car does not turn over, meaning the engine does not rev and you do not hear a “click”, your battery may be dead. It is a simple fix but you want to make sure that it has been installed correctly. If you are unsure and want a professional opinion, contact Mobile Automotive Services of Oklahoma City.

If you notice your battery cables are corroded and you see a greenish/white substance, this could be the cause of your troubles. It is easy to clean with a wire brush but be very careful not to further damage the cables.

Alternator Repair & Installation

It all starts with a few telltale problems: A dash light coming on for a brief moment, maybe dimmed headlights and a few flickering gauges. Perhaps there’s even an odd smell, or a growling sound coming from under the hood. Most likely it’s one of many possible alternator problems, and if attention is not given quickly, this problem can cause car trouble ranging from slow starts all the way up to a stranded car.

While the alternator is a not a complex component of your engine, it is responsible for running your accessories. Essentially it turns the mechanical energy of the engine’s rotating crank shaft into electricity through induction. Wires within the alternator cut through a magnetic field; this in turn induces electrical current. The alternator is responsible for keeping your battery charged to guarantee a start next time you are going somewhere.

Power Steering Repair

You need new shocks (and/or struts) if your original shocks (or struts) are worn out, damaged or leaking. If you incur leaking or wetness on the outside of the shock or strut, this is a sign of damage. Wear ear is often more of a subjective thing to judge. There are also instances where the original equipment shocks may not be worn, damaged or leaking, but may not be adequate for the job they’re being asked to do. In such cases, upgrading the suspension with stronger, stiffer or some type of special shock (or strut) may be recommended to improve handling, for trailer towing, hauling overloads or other special uses.

Timing Belt Installation & Repair

Changing a timing belt is not an easy job. It will require the average back yard do-it-yourselfer a full weekend to remove all of the parts necessary to reach the timing belt. It is recommended to change your timing belt every 60,000. A broken timing belt can cause your engine to overheat and cost you a lot of money.
